Since 2000, we have been closely involved with the site selection, stakeholder consultation and design development of ventilation shafts for the Crossrail. The Stepney Green project has architecturally evolved from Design Inception to Final Reference Design with global multi-disciplinary consultancies including Mott Macdonald and Halcrow.

The Stepney Green Shaft is located on Crossrail between Whitechapel Station and Mile End Shaft/ Lowell Street Shaft. The shaft provides an Emergency Intervention Point (EIP) and acts as a ventilation shaft providing forced ventilation in an emergency situation. The shaft also acts as a launch point for tunnel boring machines.

Given the park nature of the site, development of the external works is paramount to the success of the scheme. It has been a design objective to integrate the head house structures as far as possible with their 'external works to the twin head houses can be grouped under two headings; soft landscaping and play and hard standing.
