Stratford Formal Opening

Fereday Pollard are delighted to see this month’s opening of the new western entrance to the iconic Stratford Station on London Underground’s Jubilee Line. Having worked with the Taylor Woodrow/Bam Nuttall JV over the past three years and provided both design development and detailed design information and construction support, the opening milestone marks the conclusion of a highly successful collaborative team approach. Added interest for Fereday Pollard is that the practice first carried out a series of modifications including additional platforms, accommodation structures and underpass to the station in preparation for London’s Olympic Park nearly 20 years ago.

The £8.4 million project is a joint initiative between Newham Council, Transport for London (TfL), the GLA and the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) and designed to improve access to the station from the Carpenters Estate and the Olympic Park beyond.

Since the construction of the primary Jubilee Line Station in 1999, significant additional demand has been placed on the station to accommodate London Overground and Elizabeth Line connections resulting in Stratford becoming one of the busiest interchanges in the London area with over 44 million passengers per year.

Our architectural approach was to maintain the existing language of the station, with the new materials and detailing to match that of the original and to facilitate a seamless extension to the existing concourse. With expert structural and services designs from Robert West Structural Engineers and Fourway Services Engineers respectively, the design team was collectively able to work through the significant challenges presented by stitching in new structure into the existing station fabric and to open up a new public realm access over surface covering a dense array of high voltage, telecommunications and drainage services.

Whilst now open to the travelling public, a formal opening is scheduled to take place in October 2024 which the contracting JV and their design team greatly look forward to.

Peter Maxwell, Director of Design at LLDC, said: “This is a vitally important project for the local area. It will make a significant improvement for residents living on the Carpenters Estate and supports the wider area regeneration by providing improved access to the station for visitors to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.”
