Edgware Junior School

£3m London school extension and refurbishment with new build modularised wing to house new dining and teaching facilities.

COMPLETED
2009

As part of the London Borough of Barnet's primary school programme, we were appointed by Kier London to redesign an existing planning consent and develop the scheme through to detailed design and on site construction.

The scope of the works included retaining the existing late nineteenth century school buildings and remodelling and extending them to incorporate new wings. The additional areas were to contain a new dining hall, a new kitchen and ancillary accommodation block and new classrooms, offices and school reception.

The new dining hall is clad in sustainable timber horizontal cladding boards with strip windows and high level louvres to allow an internal passive air flow system, which we developed with Kier and the services contractor. Low level strip glazing was also introduced and set at a child's eye level to give a visual link to their external play area.

The project was completed on site in 2009 and was acclaimed by Barnet, the school and other stakeholders for finishing ahead of programme and on budget. The contractors and design team were also widely praised in the end of project client satisfaction survey.
